How to Make your Hair Grow Faster

‘Sexy Pixie hairdo’s and short Bobs and Lobs may be on-trend right now; but we Zebra’s know long, luscious locks never really go out of fashion.’

Yes, there’s nothing more head-turning than a thick, healthy mane of hair! But you know (and I know) there’s an awful lot of hair-growing angst in between sexy short and luscious long (especially if you’re in that dreaded post-pixie in-between stage). It seems to take aaaages and it’s fraught with endless bed hair, shedding bobby pins, hats and headbands. Yeesh.

So how do you get those thick Kardashian-style tresses happening sooner rather than later?

What most people don’t realise is that hair is actually an accessory organ of the skin – and just like your heart or lungs there’s a lot you can do to keep it healthy and growing at its best (just over a centimetre a month, or 15 centimetres in a year).

Here’s our 6 top Zebra-tips for making your hair grow faster.

1. Stay healthy

Ever noticed dull, dry or flat hair during stressful periods or times when your health and well-being are affected? When your body’s general health is poor it shows in your hair; so the first thing you can do to keep your hair growing at a maximum is to keep your body healthy. Drink lots of water, stay on top of your exercise, get lots of sleep and maintain a stress-free lifestyle where possible. Keep that body machine well oiled!

2. Think about your diet or supplement with vitamins

Vitamins A, B, C and E, iron, zinc and Vitamin B-complex in particular are great for hair growth. That means lots of dairy foods, eggs, whole grains, salmon, leafy green veggies, broccoli, avocado, and oats in your diet are the go! And don’t forget Kale, the “queen of greens.” Kale is packed with low calorie vitamins which strengthen your hair roots, and improve the blood circulation in your scalp. Never do a dietary “cleanse” – this will only deprive your body of nutrients and your hair is the first thing which will suffer.

3. Estrogen karma

When in balance, estrogen makes women feel energised and alive! But weight gain, toxicity in our food and water, synthetic skincare products and too much exposure to plastics can cause estrogen levels to get out of balance. This causes hair to thin or even fall out, and makes growing long hair impossible. Ladies, as a guide – go natural where you can. Avoid junk food containing artificial flavourings, synthetic skincare products and use only food safe plastics where possible.

4. Get a regular trim

Ok so getting a regular trim won’t actually make your hair grow faster – but it will prevent split ends from working their way up the strands. A trim every 6-8 weeks will not only keep you feeling motivated and loving your hair – it will also keep the tips looking thick and healthy and prevent breakages which means you won't have to chop it all off.

5. Oils matter

Your hair’s natural oils are there to protect and nourish – so too much washing is actually a bad thing when you’re trying to grow your hair. Brushing your hair every day shifts the oils from the scalp down the hair strands; so even if you’re washing daily, brushing your hair will really help. Don’t wash away nature’s best conditioner! Shampoo lightly two or three times a week – or every second day if you exercise a lot – and never skip your conditioning treatment. If you’re worried about an oily look, try dry shampoo; it’s gentler on your hair than real washing.

6. Don’t style your hair every day

Hot irons, synthetic hair products and too much blow-drying will damage your hair long-term. Make a pact with yourself to go al naturale once or twice a week and let the air dry your hair. The less you do with your hair, the stronger, healthier and longer it will be.

Happy hair-growing Zebras!
